Update the Old Post in Place

Deleting a post from two winters ago throws away an address people saved. Change the sentence that is no longer true and keep the address.

If a page you wrote two winters ago still opens, that address is a place people have saved. The mistake is either to delete the whole post or to leave a sentence that is no longer true. Deleting drops the visitor on an empty page. Leaving the old sentence makes a promise you no longer keep. The fix is to change the sentence that is wrong, write the month of the update at the top, and leave the address itself where it is. On a boiler-service post, that sentence is the one about a wall-hung type you used to refuse because you had no parts, and which you now service. The rest of the post, if it is still right about pressure and the filling loop, does not have to be written again from the start.

1. Read the post as a customer would

You are used to your own sentences, so the eye can skip the place that is now wrong. The mistake is to publish once and never open the post again. The fix is to read it aloud and mark which boiler type you turned away, which time you promised, and which price frame has expired, because one wrong sentence makes the whole post look doubtful.

2. Change the sentence that is no longer true

You did not service a wall-hung type because you did not carry the part, and if those parts are now on the shelf the old sentence is a lie and the visitor hears no at the door. The mistake is to open a new post and forget the old one, because people may have shared the old address. The fix is to renew the sentence inside the same paragraph: we now service this type, we take the yearly service, and we keep the part in the van, so the old reader sees the new word in the same place.

3. Put the month of the update at the top

If the reader cannot tell whether the sentence was written this winter or two winters ago, they will take an old no for a new yes. The mistake is to bury the change in the body and add no date. The fix is a short line just under the title: updated this month, we now service a type we used to refuse, and the line is one sentence and also separates the old advice that still stands.

4. Leave the address where it is

The link to the post may sit on a card, in an old message, or on another page of yours. The mistake is to delete the post and open a new address, because the old link then goes to an empty page. The fix is to update at the same address, and even if the title shifts a little the address should not, and a new post should open only when the subject is truly new, while this one is the same job corrected.

5. Do not rewrite it as a slogan

Using the update as a reason to fill the whole post with quality service and years of experience deletes the advice that was useful. The mistake is to throw out the still-correct account of pressure and the filling loop and put a general line in its place. The fix is to leave the paragraphs that are still right and add one concrete detail from a service you did this winter: the filling loop was dripping, we changed the washer, and the pressure was still in place the next day.

A concrete correction can stand like this. The old sentence said we do not service this wall-hung type, because there is no part. The new line says updated this month, we service this type and we take the yearly service. The account of a pressure drop and the filling loop stays. The address is the same. The visitor sees a yes where they expected a no and does not accuse you with an old promise. You do not have to tell the same subject again from the start on a second page.
