Write the Title Tag as the Window Line

The title in the browser tab should be the sentence you would paint on the glass. Put the job first, and do not pile praise between bars.

The title tag is the sentence in the browser tab and in the blue line of a search result. A person walking past the shop reads one sentence painted on the glass, and they do the same in the tab. The mistake is to turn that line into a pile split by bars: home, best, cheap, locksmith, district, district, night. That pile would look absurd on the glass as well. The fix is to build one sentence you would not be ashamed to paint. For a locksmith that can be lock opening and lock change, the workshop on the market street, and a visit when someone is shut out. If you are not open all night, do not promise it in the title. Because the line gets cut, the name of the job comes first.

1. Build the sentence you would paint

You would not paint best and cheap on the glass, you would paint that locks are opened and locks are changed, and the tab should have the same calm. The mistake is to treat the title as a list of keywords. The fix is to write the sentence on paper first and read it once aloud, and if you are ashamed the line is wrong, and if the job is there and the praise is not, the line is right.

2. Put the name of the job first

The tab is narrow and the end of the line is cut, so if the word locksmith is at the end the person sees only the shop name. The mistake is to write the brand first, then the district, and the job last. The fix is that the first words are the work itself: lock opening and lock change, then the street of the workshop or the case you come out for, so that even if the line is cut the job stays visible.

3. Separate the home page from the service page

The home title can carry the shop name and the main job, while the title of the lock-change page should carry only that job. The mistake is to copy the same pile onto every page. The fix is to make each title the window sentence of that page, so the lock-opening page says lock opening, the key-cutting page says key cutting, and the two are not copies of each other.

4. Use the district once, and use no promise you cannot keep

The district may stand once in the title, because people ask where you are, but squeezing it between every word breaks the sentence. The mistake is to put words you cannot keep, such as all night or number one, into the title. The fix is not to hide a seven o'clock close, but to leave it out of the title, and a visit to a shut-out door belongs in the sentence only if you really go.

5. Do not let the title contradict the first sentence on the page

If the tab says lock opening and the page only cuts keys, the visitor feels misled. The mistake is to treat the title as an advert separate from the page. The fix is to make the title a short form of the first sentence on the page, so whatever the page does is named in the title, and a job the page does not do does not enter the title, and the person who clicks sees the job they expected.

A concrete window sentence can stand like this. Lock opening and lock change, the workshop on the market street, and a visit when someone is shut out of the home. The home page carries this sentence. The lock-change page says only the change of a mortice lock, and it does not carry a pile of brands and districts. An all-night service is not written, because you close in the evening. You would not be ashamed to paint the sentence on the glass, and the same words stand in the tab.
