The Cost of Two Different Phone Numbers
Two numbers feel like a spare. On the profile and the website they often become two shops. The quiet line makes people think you do not pick up.
Two numbers feel like a spare. On the profile and the website they often become two shops. One rings at the counter. The other rings in a drawer, or in the pocket of someone who has left. The customer who called the quiet line thinks you do not pick up. A locksmith had the profile on his old line and the site on the shop line. Evening calls never reached the counter. He moved the profile to the shop line that is forwarded to him. He removed the old line the same afternoon. He wrote one line. Calls and messages on the shop line. Letting people feel two numbers promises two doors. One door, one line.
1. Choose one number a person answers during open hours, and put it on the profile, the site, the sign, and the receipt.
The spare line should not take the place of the main line. If the main line does not ring, the spare stays a decoration. The customer does not call a decoration, they call what rings.
2. If the workshop has a second line, add it only where you can label it, and only if someone answers.
That line should not take the place of the main number on the map. An unlabelled second line reads like a second shop. If nobody answers, it should not enter the list at all.
3. If messages and voice go to different lines, say so in one line.
Do not make people guess which icon works. A guess is a request written on the wrong line. The request stays there, and the counter never sees it.
4. The day you drop a number, remove it from the profile, the site, and the directory.
A dead number on the map is a missed job. If the old line still rings, shut it. A dead line that still rings brings the old listing back to life.
5. After the edit, call both lines yourself from another phone.
The one that should ring does ring, and the one you retired does not appear. If it appears, the delete did not settle, so delete it again. Do not close without the test.
The locksmith now hears the evening calls at the counter. The old line is not on the list. The site and the profile show the same line. The customer calls once and does not guess a second line. The one line sits beside the door.
If the person who changes the line and the person who edits the site are not the same, let both finish the job the same morning. If one finishes and the other remains, two numbers continue. Shut the old phone in the drawer that day, and do not leave it on charge. A phone left on charge rings at night, you do not hear it, and the customer thinks you did not pick up. A new hand should not print the old line on a card. The card puts the number you deleted back on the street. Once a month, read the number on the profile aloud and call it from the phone at the counter. If the phone that answers is at the counter, the line is right. If it answers in another room, the line has split. A split line is the quiet start of two shops.
